The Core Function of an Alternator

While many people mistakenly believe the battery powers the car while the engine is running, the battery is primarily for starting the engine. Once the engine is on, the alternator takes over.

Its two primary jobs are:

1. Continuous Power: It generates electricity to power all the car’s electrical systems—the headlights, fuel pump, windshield wipers, air conditioning, and infotainment system.

2. Battery Charging: It sends a constant flow of electricity back into the battery to replace the energy used during the ignition process, ensuring the battery is fully charged for the next time you start your car.
